Rhinoplasty

Rediscover Your Beauty

in Turkey

The nose is the central feature of the face and, as such, holds significant aesthetic importance. Modifying the shape or size of the nasal structure can lead to a remarkable transformation in appearance and enhance facial harmony.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Nose reshaping surgery (rhinoplasty) is likely the most commonly performed aesthetic surgical procedure. The surgeon reshapes the nose to adjust the angle between the upper lip and nose, modify the appearance of the nostrils, reduce the size of the nose, or remove a bump on the nasal bridge.

Regardless of the main reason for the procedure, the goal of rhinoplasty is always to achieve the most balanced and natural-looking result while preserving or improving nasal function.

How Many Types of Rhinoplasty Are There?

Rhinoplasty is generally a straightforward surgery that still requires a few days of rest and recovery. The more informed you are about the procedure and the more carefully you weigh the decision, the more satisfying the results will be. There are several types of rhinoplasty depending on the desired goal and the technique used.

Closed Rhinoplasty:

Performed under general anesthesia, this involves making two incisions inside the nostrils. Through these incisions, the surgeon gains access to the nasal structure, modifying its shape and size to suit the patient’s facial proportions. This type requires greater expertise, making the choice of surgeon highly important.

Open Rhinoplasty:

In addition to the internal incisions, this approach involves a small incision on the columella (the area separating the nostrils). The skin is lifted, the cartilage and bone are reshaped, and sutures are applied. This method allows better visibility for the surgeon and minimal scarring, which typically becomes undetectable within three months.

Secondary Rhinoplasty:

This procedure is performed after a previous rhinoplasty that did not achieve satisfactory results. Secondary rhinoplasty involves greater technical challenges and requires significant dedication from the surgeon to regain the trust of a patient often traumatized by an unsuccessful first surgery.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty:

Nasal reshaping can also be achieved through non-surgical methods, such as injecting fillers into soft tissues. This procedure requires no anesthesia and can smooth, fill, and correct nasal irregularities. However, results are temporary and not guaranteed.

Surgical Procedure

What Are the Benefits of Aesthetic Rhinoplasty ?

Rhinoplasty has clear benefits, visible a few days after the surgery.
However, the final appearance and results of the procedure can be fully observed after 12 months, once the body has healed.

What Are the Benefits of Reconstructive Rhinoplasty?

Reconstructive rhinoplasty can be combined with ENT procedures to remove nasal obstructions (e.g., septal deviation correction). Key benefits include:

Benefits

Medical Benefits of Rhinoplasty

For patients undergoing rhinoplasty for medical reasons (e.g., septal deviation or trauma), the benefits include:

Proper nasal breathing is essential for overall health. If nasal breathing is compromised, switching to mouth breathing can increase the risk of allergies and infections.

Emotional Benefits of Rhinoplasty

For those undergoing rhinoplasty for aesthetic reasons, the emotional benefits include:

How Is the Nose Structured and What Are Its Shapes?

The nose has the shape of a pyramid composed of bones and cartilage, covered externally by skin and lined internally with mucosa. Beneath the skin lies a thin muscular layer responsible for wrinkling the skin in this area and for dilating or constricting the nostrils.

The nasal bones resemble a roof, which continues downward into triangular cartilage. In the midline lies the septal cartilage. At the tip of the nose, above the nostrils, are the alar cartilages, whose shape determines the appearance of the nasal tip (the lobule).

When Is Rhinoplasty Recommended?

Rhinoplasty is a highly personalized procedure recommended when:

  1. The patient is an adult (over 18), with fully developed facial structures.
  2. They are in good health.
  3. Their expectations are realistic.

What Other Procedures Can Be Done Alongside Rhinoplasty?

Alongside rhinoplasty, a septoplasty (correction of a deviated septum) is commonly performed, as well as other procedures targeting either the aesthetic or functional aspects of the nose. However, due to the delicate nature of rhinoplasty, additional interventions are generally not recommended to be combined with this surgery.

What Does the Preoperative Consultation for Rhinoplasty Involve?

măsurarea nasului înainte de rinoplastie

A preoperative visit to the anesthetist is mandatory. Both the surgeon and the anesthetist will answer all the patient’s questions about the procedure. During the consultation, the surgeon will take the following steps:

  • Evaluate the shape and size of the nose in relation to the other facial features and ideal proportions.
  • Analyze the angle between the nose and upper lip, which ideally should be 90 degrees for men and over 90 degrees for women.
  • Examine nostril symmetry and the position of the septum, as well as any potential breathing issues.
  • Assess the quality of the nasal skin, as thicker skin may limit the extent of changes that can be achieved through surgery.
  • Take photographs and measurements of the nose’s current dimensions.
  • Review the patient’s health status and gather information about their medical history.

The surgeon will also recommend preoperative tests, which may include:

  • Blood tests to confirm the patient’s overall health.
  • Imaging studies such as X-rays or CT scans to assess nasal structure.
  • ENT consultations if necessary.

Additionally, the doctor will adjust or stop certain medications that increase bleeding risk, such as aspirin, oral anticoagulants, or herbal remedie

Postoperative Recovery

  • Blood Tests
Routine investigations are required to confirm the patient’s overall health. A standard set of analyses is typically necessary.

  • Imaging Investigations
A facial X-ray will provide details about the nasal pyramid’s structure. In cases of significant nasal deformities or associated obstructions, a CT scan or MRI may also be required.

piramidei nazale sau în cazul obstrucției nazale asociate se poate impune efectuarea unui CT sau RMN

Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia, although local anesthesia with intravenous sedation is also possible.

  • Closed Rhinoplasty:
Incisions are made inside the nose, providing access to reshape the cartilage and bones.

  • Open Rhinoplasty:
An external incision is made on the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils), offering better visualization of the nasal structures.

The procedure may involve reducing or augmenting certain structures. Augmentation can include grafting cartilage (commonly from the septum, ear, or rib). Deviated septum correction involves either removing or reshaping the deformed portion. Once the desired shape is achieved, incisions are sutured.

Duration:
The surgery typically lasts 1–2 hours but can be extended depending on the complexity of the modifications.

General complications include those common to invasive procedures, such as cardio-respiratory issues related to general anesthesia.

  • Hospitalization: Patients typically stay in the hospital for one night and are discharged the next day.
  • Support Devices: Bones and cartilage are supported with an external splint, and internal nasal packing prevents bleeding and maintains structural stability.
  • Follow-Up Devices: The splint and silicone tubes are removed after 5–6 days. Additional retainers and taping may be prescribed for a period determined during the final consultation.
  • Positioning: Patients should lie on their back with their head slightly elevated.
  • Cold Compresses: Apply to the forehead and eye area to reduce bruising and swelling.
  • Discomfort Management: Mild to moderate discomfort can be managed with common pain relievers.

Progress:

  • Gradual improvement in nasal shape and contour will be noticeable over 3–6 months, with swelling disappearing completely within 12 months.
  • The final result will be visible once the healing process is fully complete.

Care Instructions:
Doctors will provide detailed instructions for cleaning and medication, including antibiotics to prevent infection, ointments to reduce bruising, anti-inflammatory drops, and saline sprays for nasal hygiene.

  • Bleeding within the first hours, sometimes requiring replacement of nasal packing.
  • Hematomas.
  • Localized infections, often managed with antibiotics and frequent cleaning.
  • Red marks from the splint’s friction (rare and treatable).
  • Temporary or long-term numbness around the nose.
  • Irregularities in contour or unsatisfactory aesthetic results, which may require minor corrections.
  •
  • Swelling:
Swelling reduction is a slow process, sometimes taking up to a year or longer. The top of the nose deflates first, followed by the middle, with the tip being the last.

  • Hardness:
The nasal tip may feel firm for up to a year due to residual swelling.

  • Asymmetrical Swelling:
One side of the nose may deflate faster than the other, which is normal.

Proper aftercare, including avoiding sun exposure, intense physical effort, and wearing glasses during the recovery period, is crucial for optimal results.

To Meet Your Diverse Needs, Our Clinic Proudly Offers a Wide Range of Services Complementary to Rhinoplasty.

Whether you seek aesthetic improvements or require functional interventions, our team of specialists is here to provide the highest level of medical care. Here are some of the additional services we offer:

Septoplasty

This procedure corrects a deviated septum, a common condition that can cause breathing difficulties, frequent nosebleeds, and other discomforts. Septoplasty can help you breathe easier and improve your quality of life by properly aligning the wall between your nostrils.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Using minimally invasive endoscopic technology, this surgical intervention aims to alleviate chronic sinusitis symptoms such as nasal congestion, headaches, and facial pressure. The procedure allows for a quick recovery and minimizes postoperative discomfort.

Turbinectomy

This procedure involves reducing the size of the nasal turbinates, bony structures covered by mucosa that can become inflamed and obstruct airflow. Turbinectomy is often recommended to improve breathing and reduce nasal congestion symptoms.

Adenoidectomy

Primarily indicated for children, this procedure removes adenoids or “polyps” located at the back of the nose. Enlarged adenoids can block the airways, leading to recurrent ear infections, sore throats, and sleep problems.

Each of these services is performed with the utmost care and attention by our specialists, ensuring a quick recovery and optimal results. We are dedicated to offering personalized solutions that cater to your specific needs.

Q&A

On average, patients may experience mucous or bloody nasal drainage for about 2 days following the procedure. However, a normal range can vary from 1 day to up to a week.

Patients are advised to wait 6 weeks before returning to contact sports. If kissing feels like a contact sport, wait 6 weeks. Otherwise, you can kiss as soon as it’s comfortable and painless.

Patients should avoid wearing sunglasses for 6 months (or at least 3 months). If necessary, glasses can rest on a splint to avoid damaging the skin and healing process.

Initially, you may notice a diminished sense of smell due to congestion, but it should return to normal within 4 weeks as swelling subsides.

Since the sense of smell can be impacted, your sense of taste may also seem diminished. However, it should normalize once your sense of smell is restored.

Thin plastic sheets, known as silastic splints, are used to stabilize the septum during the postoperative period. These splints are typically removed during the first postoperative visit.

During recovery, sneeze with your mouth open to allow airflow to escape through your mouth. If you have allergic rhinitis, antihistamine tablets may be prescribed post-surgery.

Saline nasal sprays are recommended for cleaning the nose post-surgery. Forceful blowing should be avoided for at least 1 month.

Yes, this is normal and typically temporary. If extensive corrections are made to the front part of the septal cartilage, numbness may persist longer.

Patients are advised to wait 1 week before consuming alcohol as it thins the blood and may increase swelling or bleeding. Smoking is discouraged, but if unavoidable, wait 2 weeks after surgery. Nicotine constricts blood vessels in the nose, which can slow the healing process.

You can shower the day after surgery and wash your face as usual, avoiding bandages.

Wait 1 month before returning to intense activities such as running, weightlifting, or sexual activity.

Nasal casts are worn during the first week, and bandages in the second week. You can apply makeup to your skin 2 weeks after surgery but clean gently. Eye and lip makeup can be applied immediately after surgery.

It is recommended to spray 2 saline solutions into each nostril at least 4 times daily after surgery. This helps prevent large blood clots that can block breathing and cause discomfort.

Non-dissolvable sutures are removed in the first week. Dissolvable sutures typically resolve within 1 month.

Sleep with your head elevated at a 30-45 degree angle and lie on your back for the first week.

Avoid complete submersion for at least 1 month.

Nose piercings carry a risk of infection, and are not generally recommended. If desired, wait at least 6 months post-surgery.

Depending on the surgery, you may feel some discomfort when smiling, but smiling is allowed.

The hardest part of recovery is the first week. During this time, full support is provided. Complete nasal healing to achieve the final shape may take at least 1 year, depending on skin type and the procedure performed. Swelling will reduce significantly in the first month but may persist inconsistently thereafter.
